In just about any survival situation, one of the most indispensable tools is a high quality knife. There is currently a wide variety of folding knives available that would benefit any outdoor adventurer.
Modern-day folding knives allow hunters, fishermen, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts to carry along a versatile tool that is easy to transport. In the past, knives could be quite unwieldy as they were not foldable and had to be sheathed for added protection. These days, knives can be folded and easily stored in one's pocket. Depending on personal preference, there are folding knives made with varying blade compositions and with a number of extra features.

When choosing your folding knife, keep in mind that it's usually not necessary to purchase one with a blade longer than six inches. For most purposes, a four to six-inch blade will do. Anything more than this will become cumbersome. It will be well worth it to not go cheap when purchasing a knife that could become a wilderness survival tool. Poorly-made knives will wear out quicker and have a far greater chance of breaking, which is not something you want to chance in a survival situation. Research your options well in order to find a solid and dependable folding knife.
For a blade that will last longer before it needs sharpening, choose one with a high carbon steel blade. However, if you are a novice sharpener, be aware that sharpening a high carbon steel blade can be more difficult than sharpening a knife with a stainless steel blade.
There are folding knives and pocket knives that come equipped with a single blade or several blades. Some include one blade with a plain straight edge and another with a serrated edge. While pocket knives with multiple tools and blades can be beneficial, high quality folding knives with a single blade or two blades will usually prove to be far stronger.
The most practical outdoor folding knives will be easy to control and access, and should also be relatively lightweight. Consider what you will be using your knife most for. Whether it's for hunting, for wilderness survival, or for both, which is often the case, you are likely to find a folding knife that will serve you well.
