The shamshir or scimitar style blade originated in the middle-east where it has been treasured by knife enthusiasts around the world for many years. Spyderco and Ed Schempp have collaborated to bring you their version of this classic design in a folding knife that is truly unique.
I recently got a good deal on the Schempp Persian folding knife and here are my thoughts:
Spyderco Knives
What I like about the knife:
1. The lockback mechanism is super tough. To me, this is perhaps the most important part of a folding knife. Spyderco is known for making rock solid locks and the Persian folder is no exception.
My knife has absolutely no movement when in the locked position.
2. Not only is the micarta handle very comfortable to hold, but the stainless steel bolsters add to its high quality allure.
3. My knife came scary sharp right out of the box and has no problem holding it's edge. Each blade is made from VG-10 stainless steel, which is known for having great toughness and edge retention.
4. The knife opens with Spyderco's thumb hole. Directly behind the hold there is a bump that is perfect for resting your thumb when you need to cut through something delicately.
5. The hollow ground, upward curved blade holds true to it's middle-eastern heritage and is just plain attractive. Aesthetics aside, the blade is very practical and makes for an awesome cutting tool.
What I didn't like:
The pocket clip is not ambidextrous to allow for left-handed carry. Thankfully I am right handed, but some of you might miss out on a killer knife because of this.
Overall:
With a suggested retail value of 9.95, the Spyderco Schempp Persian folding knife is a steal for the money. I've seen plenty of knives for sale around the same price that aren't nearly as cool as this one. Thumbs way up and highly recommended!
